R2-D2 from Sphero, the ever faithful Star Wars droid in the palm of your hand #r2d2 #sphero

Having reviewed some of Sphero’s line of robots over the past three years (including the amazing gravity defying BB-8), I was absolutely made up when R2-D2 dropped onto my desk a few weeks back!

For those of us who haven’t been near a movie theatre of television for the last 40 years, R2-D2 is character from the enormously popular STAR WARS movie franchise, appearing in 9 of them (sofar!). The droid (robot) is portrayed as a skilled mechanic, fighter pilot’s assistant and has many hidden skills which have been gradually revealed over the course of the movies.

Sphero have clearly made sure that their version of R2-D2 is as authentic as possible and it is absolutely crammed with technology which mimics the character from the movies. With front and rear LED lights, rotating head, integrated speaker and most amazing of all articulating legs, which mean when Artoo is stationary, his legs are position straight down and he stands upright. As soon as he is commanded to move, the middle leg drops down and moves forward, his side legs then move backwards to form a tripod (as he does in the films).

R2D2 from SpheroArtoo is controlled using Sphero’s Droid App (iOS or Android), after scanning for the app, you are presented with a selection screen showing the available droids within Bluetooth range, after selecting R2-D2 from the list he suddenly lights up and chirps. The app screen then shows controls for moving the droid and also for triggering his signature moves.

R2D2 from SpheroThese moves really make the whole experience authentic as they mimic scenes from the film, such as when the Jawas disabled the droid and caused him to fall on his face in A New Hope. There are simply too many to detail here, but you could recreate pivotal scenes from Star Wars using these moves alone.

R2D2 from SpheroAside from these features, the app also allows for Holographic Simulation and the ability to explore difference places and ship interiors from the Star Wars galaxy. It also supports Droid to Droid experience, where R2-D2 will interact with other Sphero Star Wars droids.

There is a ‘Watch With Me’ feature was one of my favourites, which allows you to select a movie from the Star Wars saga and R2-D2 will react to difference scenes, such as acting scared when Darth Vader appears on the screen and much more.

R2D2 from SpheroCharging the droid is done using the included stylised USB cable and will give over 1 hour of full use between charges.

I’m a big fan of Star Wars, so I have to admit I was a bit star-struck when I realised just how good the Sphero R2-D2 really is and at the current price of under £95, it feels like good value for any of fan Star Wars.

It should also be noted, that along with Sphero range of robots and droids, R2-D2 is fully compatible with Sphero-Edu which gives budding young coders the opportunity to learn about programming using their favourite Star Wars character.

Gadget Man – Episode 107 – Sphero Mini – Educational Robot

This morning I joined Wayne Bavin at BBC Radio Suffolk to both discuss and demonstrate modular coding with the help of the Sphero Mini Robot.

It was a great opportunity to show how coding can be fun with the aid of a trio of programmable robots.

Best gadgets for Valentine’s Day gift 2018

It is already February and you know that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! If you aren’t a romantic person and you don’t feel like wasting money on chocolate hearts and flowers I have few ideas you can use. Here are most interesting presents you can give for Valentine’s Day which are useful, cool and very interesting.

Prynt Pocket photo printer for iPhone

I assume that your better half loves to take pictures and her iPhone memory is always full so this little printer can help her pick the best ones for her wallet or even phone case. The printer is small, light and the best part about it is the fact that each picture is actually a sticker so she can literally make a phone case out of the dearest photos. I am pretty certain you can score with this smart gadget this Valentine.

Leather tassel charging cable

This leather tassel may not be as attractive as the photo printer but it is one of the most useful and best-looking things she will own. It is a keychain and it looks like those modern keychains everybody is buying, but it is also a charging cable. Basically, it means that she can connect her phone to the laptop whenever she wants and wherever she wants. The best part – she will look amazing doing it 😀

Foosball iPad stand

Now, this is more like a present for the male population than for female, but who says that men can’t get Valentine’s Day present? Foosball iPad stand is a combination of virtual foosball and real foosball (but pocket version). It is a gadget that looks like a foosball table but without the field. Yes, the gadget has 4 legs, 3 scoring systems, and 8 rods, 4 on each side and the field is actually your iPad. If your loved one doesn’t have room for foosball table but he really-really wants one; I would recommend this foosball gadget!

R2-D2 App-Enabled Sphero Droid

This is the droid for everybody! If you say that you don’t want to have your own R2D2, you are lying. It is like you are saying you don’t want a cake for your birthday! This droid may be a toy, but it has so many details that really looks like R2 and I am sure that there are more grown-ups with this gadget than kids. For every Star Wars fan is a dream to have this little beepy droid and you can make this dream come true. Yes, I said beeply, because the gadget produces sounds just like the real R2D2.

Gadgets like the ones on the list are interesting and useful so they are the perfect present for any occasion, not just Valentine’s Day. When you wrap them in hearts and chocolate you will surprise and impress your loved one because you will show that you made an effort and this year, thought outside of the box! Happy Valentine’s!

Star Wars The Force Awakens BB8 from Sphero – This is the Droid you are looking for!

It’s been 10 years since the last Star Wars movie was released and it looked like we wouldn’t been seeing anymore of the George Lucas universe. That was until 2012  when Lucasfilm was snapped up by Disney for $4 billion!

With this announcement came the news that the Star Wars movie franchise was to start again with the release of Episode VII The Force Awakens, followed by Episode VIII and IV plus other Star Wars movies not part of the main series. It’s certainly all go! As with the previous movies the mega marketing machine around Star Wars kicked swiftly into gear and earlier in the year Star Wars Day heralded the official reveal of a slew of toys, games, apps, games and much more.

The most enduring characters of the Star Wars series have most certainly been the droids R2D2 and C3PO, both featuring in all the films in the current series and set to continue to appear in the future too. Along with these fan favourites a new droid is set to take a starring role in The Force Awakens, his (we think it is a he) name is BB8.

BB8 shares certain similarities with R2D2 in the style the dome that carries the eye, however rather than the dustbin style body with legs, BB8’s body is made up of a large ball with the head magically floating onto as the ball rotates to move the droid around.

Disney have licenced the job of producing a ‘toy’ version of BB8 to the tech wizards at Sphero, who have in the past produced a number of robots based on balls that can be controlled by phone apps. BB8 retains this style of control, requiring the user to control the droid using a iPhone or Android device connected via a special app and Bluetooth. BB8 is charged by sitting the ball in a little cradle and whilst charging the dome head will move around is if taking in the surroundings.

Once charged, you place BB8 on the floor and run up the special app, the droid jumps into life with all the sound playing through the smart phone. You can choose to pilot the droid using controls on the app, control it via ‘set piece’ moves, set it on patrol around your space where it with detect obstacles and attempt to avoid them whilst chirping away in the same style as R2D2. You can also control BB8 via voice by training the app to recognise different commands.

Finally you there is a entertaining ‘Hologram’ mode. This allows you to record a short video message on your phone and then have BB8 project it like a hologram. In reality this is done  by pointing your phone camera at BB8 and having the hologram overlaid onto the image on the screen. It is quite cool though,

The Sphero BB8 is  not really a toy aimed at young children and at around £120, it’s fairly pricey to and might have limited interest after the hysteria of the movie dies down.  Expect more from BB8 in the upcoming movies and a revised ‘battle damaged BB8’ in 2016

The Gadget Man – Episode 82 – Gadget Review of the Year

The gadgets are coming in thick and fast at the moment, but one gadget I was really looking forward to reviewing is none other than the Star Wars BB8 Droid from Sphero, not only was it featured on the show but I also spent some time in the green room demonstrating it to none other than magician Paul Daniels and singer Andy Abrahams. I also had the duty of cracking open our fully brewed keg of Brew Barrel which featured last week, it was very tasty!!!

Listen in to the stream above and watch out for a full review on BB8 in the next few days
